Matt Hayes

Matt Hayes serves as Vice President, Chief Safety Officer.
He is responsible for overseeing the company's regional safety model and safety culture, developing and maintaining safety standards, implementing PG&E's Safety Excellence Management System, and developing programs for contractor safety, occupational safety and health, and transportation safety. Additionally, Hayes oversees the company’s employee training programs.
Hayes has more than two decades of experience in the nuclear power and utility industry. Since joining PG&E in 2016, he has held key roles of increasing responsibility within the company's Nuclear and Power Generation functional areas. Hayes’ experience includes managing organizational effectiveness and employee training programs; safety culture monitoring programs; social-behavioral and organizational excellence analyses; and critical safety-related root cause evaluations.
Prior to PG&E, Hayes worked for South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company, Southern California Edison, and Florida Power and Light, and served six years in the United States Navy.
Hayes earned a Bachelor and Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering Technology from Thomas Edison State University, and a Doctorate in Organizational Change and Leadership from the University of Southern California. Additionally, he holds a Safety Management Systems certification from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, and a Senior Certified Professional certification with the Society for Human Resources Management.
