PG&E is committed to continuous improvement when it comes to how we report our impacts and sustainable business strategies. The information below reflects PG&E’s contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We have highlighted the goals that are material to our work and our contributions to reaching them. Unless otherwise noted, our response reflects year-end 2024 performance. 

SDG Goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing

Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

 

Coworker health and safety

  • Adopted new strategies to enhance PG&E’s Safety Excellence Management System (PSEMS) and integrate the 13 elements into various programs to improve coworker engagement. (Learn more)
  • Met or exceeded all 47 of the commitments in our Wildfire Mitigation Plan. (Learn more)
  • Responded to gas odor reports within 19.6 minutes on average, exceeding our goal for the year. (Learn more)
  • Provided free annual health screenings to coworkers and enhanced our program to provide deeper insights and additional measures into heart disease and diabetes risks. (Learn more)
  • Continued to provide a family support program for all coworkers that offers childcare and elder care discounts, priority placement, and tutoring and testing discounts. Offered summer camps, extracurricular programs, and after-school day care in select areas. (Learn more)
  • Added mental health emergency response to our enterprise first aid training to aid coworkers in staying safe during interactions with people who may be experiencing a mental health crisis (Learn more)

SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy

 

Advancing clean energy

  • Delivered 98% greenhouse gas-free electricity to customers who purchase their power directly from us. (Learn more)
  • Managed contracts for more than 4.6 GW of battery energy storage to be deployed over the next several years and operated 183 MW of owned battery storage, strengthening California’s grid efficiency and reliability. (Learn more)
  • Increased renewable natural gas (RNG) interconnections, enabling over 3 billion cubic feet of RNG to flow through our system. (Learn more)

Enabling customer solutions

  • Helped customers avoid the emission of 8.3 million lifecycle metric tons of carbon dioxide through our energy efficiency programs. (Learn more
  • Enabled up to 342 MW of load reduction through our demand response programs, helping to balance electricity supply and demand to support California’s evolving grid needs. (Learn more)
  • Reached 700,000+ EVs in operation in our service area—about 1 in 8 of all EVs in the U.S—and installed more than 3,800 new EV charging ports. (Learn more)
  • Brought the total number of rooftop solar customers connected to the grid to nearly 900,000—about 1 in 7 of all solar rooftops in the U.S. (Learn more)
  • Supported more than 120,000 customers who have installed battery storage at their homes or businesses. (Learn more)

Supporting energy affordability

  • Provided weatherization, energy efficiency solutions, and appliances to more than 50,750 income-qualified households through our Energy Savings Assistance Program. (Learn more)
  • Provided 1.4 million income-qualified customers with a monthly discount on their bill through the CARE program. (Learn more)

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation

 

Reducing wildfire risk

  • Buried 258 miles of powerlines, as part of our continued investment to underground powerlines in high fire risk areas (Learn more)
  • Six Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) events were needed—with the largest affecting about 21,000 customers. (Learn more)
  • Continued our Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS) program, which allows for automatic shutdown of electric lines if the electric system senses a problem. (Learn more)

 

Fostering innovation

  • Issued an updated R&D Strategy Report as part of our vision to leverage the power of AI to accelerate the transformation of our energy system. (Learn more)
  • Deployed the first-in-the-nation 100% electric school bus fleet equipped with groundbreaking vehicle-to-grid technology as part of our EV Fleet Program and V2X pilots, in partnership with Zum and the Oakland Unified School District. (Learn more)
  • Signed up third parties to participate in our Emergency Load Reduction Program through the virtual power plant and vehicle-grid integration program options. (Learn more)
  • Secured Valley Elderberry Longhorn Beetle Habitat Conservation Plan, enhancing habitat while enabling PG&E to maintain our infrastructure with a 30-year permit. (Learn more)

Enhancing inclusion and belonging

  • Our workforce is strong and engaged (Learn more)
    • About 50% of our coworkers are ethnic minorities and 26% are women.
    • About 7% of our workforce are military veterans and 7% are individuals with disabilities (IWD).
    • 44% of our employees have a tenure of 10+ years. 
    • About 17,600 of our 28,000+ coworkers are covered by a collective bargaining agreement.

Promoting economic vitality

  • Spent $11.5 billion in total procurement with a focus on fueling long-term, economic prosperity by promoting a competitive and comprehensive supply base. (Learn more)
  • Graduated our 17th year of PowerPathway , an innovative program that helps people prepare for high demand jobs in the utility and energy industry. There have been about 1,360 graduates since the program’s inception. (Learn more)
 

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

Customer and community engagement

  • Continued to see the benefits of our Regional Service Model, with leaders in each of our five regions strengthening local relationships and addressing local needs. (Learn more)
  • Contributed 43,000+ coworker volunteer hours and supported 280+ community events. (Learn more)

 

Giving back to our communities

  • Contributed $31.9 million to charitable organizations through our Better Together Giving Program, designed to help address critical social, educational, and environmental challenges in the communities we serve. (Learn more)
  • Contributed $7.8 million in coworker, retiree, and matching gifts to over 4,800 organizations through our annual Campaign for the Community. (Learn more)
  • Completed our unprecedented Land Conservation Commitment, which will permanently protect approximately 140,000 acres of PG&E-owned watershed lands. These lands are now conserved for Californians—protecting habitat for fish, wildlife, and plants; open space and cultural resources; outdoor recreation by the general public; and sustainable forestry and agricultural uses. SDG 13: Climate Action

  • Made progress on our goal to achieve a net zero energy system in 2040. (Learn more)
  • Exceeded our annual greenhouse gas emission reduction goals relative to a 2015 baseline: (Learn more)
    • 34% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions  
    • 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions 

 

Reducing our footprint

  • Reached 42% methane emissions reductions from our gas system relative to 2015—exceeding the state’s 20% by 2025 requirement. (Learn more)
  • Deployed 85 EVs and built prototype F-150 Lightning-based pickup trucks for gas service representatives (Learn more)
  • Performed energy audits on high usage facilities, which identified energy savings opportunities. (Learn more)
  • Repaired or replaced 34 targeted circuit breakers to reduce emissions. (Learn more)
  • Repurposed 80,000 gallons of water used in hydrostatic testing for beneficial reuse, including toward irrigation, dust suppression, backfill compaction, as well as reseeding and watering disturbed areas to return them to their pre-project state. (Learn more)

 

Building climate resilience

  • Published PG&E’s Climate Adaptation Vulnerability Assessment, which documents physical climate risk to PG&E’s assets, infrastructure, operations, and service. (Learn more)
  • Awarded $400,000 in grants to help communities build a network of local hubs to build community resilience to climate-driven extreme weather events though the Resilience Hubs grant program. (Learn more)
