PG&ECorporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report 2022

See Our Climate Goals

Message from the CEO

To Our Stakeholders:

When I joined PG&E nearly two years ago, I knew that fundamental changes would be necessary to put PG&E on a better path. Today, I am proud to say that those changes are happening—in meaningful and measurable ways.

Patti Poppe speaking at a press conferencePatti Poppe announces PG&E’s “game-changing” plan to underground 10,000 miles of power lines as a long-term solution to preventing wildfires.
Everything we’ve accomplished reflects our focus on the triple bottom line—serving people, the planet and California’s prosperity, underpinned by our relentless pursuit of performance.

In the service of people—namely, the 16 million Californians who rely on PG&E every day—we are demanding excellence of ourselves through a disciplined and accountable way of doing business that is more responsive to our customers and puts their needs first.

For the planet, we are making one of the cleanest energy portfolios in the nation even cleaner, while supporting California’s transition to a low-carbon future in other key sectors of the economy.

Of the electricity we delivered in 2021, more than 90 percent came from sources that emit zero greenhouse gases, such as solar and wind. Looking ahead, the roadmap detailed in our new Climate Strategy Report includes achieving a net zero energy system by 2040 and becoming “climate positive” in 2050, meaning that we actively remove more greenhouse gases than we emit.

Perhaps most critical—particularly in serving California’s prosperity—is addressing the escalating challenges of climate change and their harmful impacts while keeping customer bills affordable. We are pursuing aggressive, breakthrough strategies to adapt our gas and electric infrastructure—not just to the conditions we are seeing now, but to those that have yet to arrive.

We are resolute in our commitment to prevent catastrophic wildfires and protect the safety of our customers and coworkers. To live up to these commitments, we intensified our efforts to reduce wildfire risk, while identifying new ways to accelerate our progress—including undergrounding 10,000 miles of overhead lines and re-engineering our electric circuits to detect potential threats instantly and shut off power automatically.

Solutions like these are how we are turning the page on the past and writing the next chapter of this iconic company.

We will rebuild our customers’ trust and deliver the great experiences they expect and deserve. We will meet the climate challenge and California’s clean energy goals. We will make it right and make it safe, for everyone who depends on us.

Sincerely,
Patricia K. Poppe
