Senior Vice President, Electric Operations | Pacific Gas and Electric Company
Wade Smith was named Senior Vice President, Electric Operations, in May 2021.
Smith leads PG&E's electric transmission and distribution operations and maintenance as well as its emergency preparedness and response efforts. He also will work in close coordination with PG&E's new Wildfire Risk Organization, set up to ensure all wildfire mitigation work is executed consistently and effectively.
Smith has more than 30 years of comprehensive operations and financial management experience in the utility industry. He spent three decades at American Electric Power (AEP), serving in various leadership roles. AEP is one of the largest utilities in the United States, serving more than 5 million customers across 11 states.
Most recently, Smith was Senior Vice President, Grid Development, overseeing transmission planning, engineering, project management, construction and system operations teams. He led AEP's transmission capital investment program and efforts to improve safety and reliability and to increase operational efficiency in its 40,000-mile transmission system.
Previously, Smith served as President and Chief Operating Officer for AEP Texas; Vice President, Transmission Engineering and Project Services for AEP Service Corporation; and Director, Gas Turbine and Joint Venture Operations for AEP Service Corporation; among other operations, commercial and engineering roles at the company.
Smith holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Texas Tech University and an MBA from Abilene Christian University. He graduated from the Executive Program at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business and from the Reactor Technology Course for Utility Executives at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Over the years, he has served as a volunteer on the boards of a wide variety of community and educational organizations, including art museums, the United Way and the Texas Tech College of Engineering Dean's Council.
