Vice President, Safety and Health and Chief Safety Officer | Pacific Gas and Electric Company
John C. Higgins is Vice President, Safety and Health at Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), reporting directly to Nick Stavropoulos, President and Chief Operating Officer. Higgins is responsible for leading employee and contractor safety programs, PG&E's Corrective Action Program and DOT & Regulatory Compliance program. His group works with all lines of business to ensure compliance with California and Federal safety requirements, identify and mitigate safety risks, and develop safety best practices. Additionally, he oversees a large portfolio of employee health and wellness programs that help employees to monitor and proactively address health needs.
Higgins joined PG&E in 2012 as Senior Director, Field Operations in PG&E's gas organization. In June 2015, he was named Vice President, Gas Transmission & Distribution Operations.
Prior to joining PG&E, Higgins was the Director, Field Operations and Construction, at Massachusetts-based National Grid US. He was responsible for gas operations across three states, as well as multiple regulatory jurisdictions and several labor unions. He held a leadership role focused on improving field safety performance and reducing third-party damages. Prior to this role, Higgins held various roles of increasing responsibility spanning construction, maintenance, resource planning, gas production and project engineering at several New England utilities.
Higgins holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Massachusetts, and is a graduate of the Greater Boston Executive Program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Higgins is a founding member and serves on the board of directors for the National Gold Shovel Standard, focused on safe excavation practices. He also volunteers as a board member for Open Heart Kitchen, a non-profit meals provider in the Bay Area.
